I have joined the cnet forum so would like to say hi to everyone. I have made one post so far and have found myself here - I think this time in the correct section.
I am quite new to computers and am very confused. I downloaded NIS 2007 from the security section of my service provider and it turned out after being told by Symantec to keep uninstalling it and reinstalling it - 4 times to be precise - that it was corrupt. It in turn sent my computer into overdrive and each thing I tried to open was corrupt also. I have never seen anything like this before and of course panicked. I found the option on windows to restore the computer to the state it was in just before the Norton program was installed so I suppose I took it back in time a few days.
I have now installed AVG 7.5 Internet Security but the one which gives a 30 day free trial. I have let it run it's full scan and I am really frightened by what I am seeing. According to AVG, there are so many threats on my computer that it can't deal with them all in one scan (it has scanned 3 times so far and hasn't got through the registry yet so needs to keep going again and again). I am really sorry for being so long winded about this but as I said I am not computer literate and think it's better to tell everything in order to ask what I need to do.
After the scan, a screen comes up which says it is 'healing the infected files' and as far as I can tell, these files all go into the Virus Vault - I hope I have got this right. I have looked at the files which are being 'healed' and there seems to be a massive amount which say .... c:system volume information_restore{F845E 3DB-F751-4BE4-A620-64F2CA1BFB5F}RP ..... I don't know if that means anything to anyone. There is also a lot in the system registry which says Adware and it has also found Trojan Horse.
Are all these thousands and thousands of threats because I restored the computer to just before NIS 2007 was installed?
What should I do with all these thousands of items in the Virus Vault? Delete them or leave them?
Could someone please help me as I am totally lost.
